Rivian R1T and R1S are approved for sale in Canada

Delays in the world of electric vehicles are not uncommon, particularly in the case of emerging companies such as Rivian. After having postponed several times its entry to us, Rivian has recently taken one of the last steps to begin sales in Canada. The vehicles have just been approved for sale by Transport Canada.

A turnaround

We learned earlier this week that Rivian had not met Transport Canada’s requirements for the certification of its electric vehicles R1T and R1S, which are already circulating in the United States. Barely 24 hours later, however, the Californian company confirmed that the two vehicles had passed the certification process of the Canadian transport authority, allowing it to begin the expected distribution of the two models imminently.

According to information shared by Drive Tesla, Rivian said the process was initially unsuccessful due to missing documentation and some details that Transport Canada needed before certifying the products. It’s now done, which allows Rivian to respect – by the skin of its teeth – the deadline it had set itself, namely to have its vehicles homologated in September.

Rivian R1T 2022

A first center in Vancouver

In all likelihood, the first reservation holders who will be filled will live in the Vancouver area. This is the city in which the American manufacturer is in the process of erecting its first service center, which is also in the process of recruiting workers. An official date for the first deliveries has not been confirmed, but judging by the date received by some of the first Canadian reservation holders, November is on the cards.

Later, service centers will be established in Toronto and Montreal, the other two cities that will allow Rivian to reach the greatest number of potential buyers. No date has been announced for this.

Rivian R1S 2022

Recall that deliveries began almost a year ago in the United States, when the first copies of Rivian R1T left the factory in Normal, Illinois, in September 2021. While Canadian customers were to receive their vehicle before the end of 2021, the delivery date was first pushed back by six months to be placed in June, then pushed back again to the end of 2022. In all likelihood, the R1T van will be the first to land, a few weeks before the R1S SUV.

In Canada, the base price of Rivian R1T is $98,500, while that of the R1S is $105,250.
