Mazda Vision Study concept gives us a taste of an electric sports car

Although the announcement of Mazda to electrify its range by 2025 is much the same announcement that all automakers are making these days, some details from this announcement piqued our curiosity. First, there’s this intriguing MX-30 R-EV equipped with a rotary engine that would act as a range extender. Then there is this: Vision Study concept which gives us a taste of the manufacturer’s sports cars in an electric world.

This concept was seen during the electrical strategy presentation video of Mazda which took place in Japan. It is at the very end of this video, when the manufacturer unpacks its vision of the future, that we see the visibly electric sports car painted in white criss-crossing the roads of Tokyo in 2030.

Mazda has mentioned absolutely nothing about this mysterious concept, but it is clear that its presence in the video serves to give us a taste of what it has in store for us in terms of a sports vehicle.

Now, what model will it be? Some automotive media have talked about the future MX-5, but this model has nothing in common with the two-seater convertible currently marketed by Mazda. Admittedly, it is true that its hardtop and sports coupe look recall the lines of an MX-5 RF. It is also true that Mazda is preparing the next generation of the MX-5, but in reality, this concept is closer to the design of the carmaker’s rotary-engined RX sports cars, such as the RX-7 and RX-8.

We also know that Mazda is preparing a whole new architecture dedicated to electric by 2025. Will this platform be inaugurated with the marketing of a sports car? It is not impossible, if we rely on the manufacturer’s history, to put forward its sports cars as flagship models. However, it is still too great for us to comment on anything.
