The Alfa Romeo Giulia ZWB Zagato, a classic car with manual gearbox

Zagato is an Italy-based car modifier. Renowned for transforming the bodywork, engines and general styling of vehicles that pass through his hands, Zagato is one of the most exclusive modifiers in the world. His latest creation is called Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato a coupe that will be built in only 1 copy.

The chassis of the Alfa Romeo Giulia

Since the cosmetic changes are so drastic, it’s hard to recognize the Alfa Romeo Giulia behind this car. However, it is. Built on the same chassis, the SWB Zagato shares the same dashboard as the Giulia.

The engine is also identical, being the 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 from the Julia GTA. It develops slightly more power, or 540 horsepower, and sends it all to the rear wheels. The similarities end here, because Zagato literally changed the whole vehicle. The exterior look, the calibration of the suspension, the brakes, the wheels, in short, everything else is exclusive to this car. Important difference, instead of using an 8-speed automatic gearbox, the SWB is equipped with a 6-speed manual.

Inspired by the history of Alfa Romeo

Two doors less, the SWB is inspired by a legendary Alfa Romeo model, the 1990 SZ. This car had a top speed of 245 km/h, was renowned for its aerodynamics and offered a controversial look at the time. The resemblance between the SWB Zagato and the SZ 1990 is indeed present. The cut profile, the front lights and the long hood give the SWB areas of SZ.

In terms of styling, the SWB was built in partnership with Alejandro Mesonero, Alfa Romeo’s artistic director. This one does not hide either the intention to bring the lines of the Zagato closer to those of the SZ Codatronca of 1961. This small Italian racing car was renowned for its aerodynamics. The green coupĂ© was therefore designed taking into account the aerodynamic aspect of Alfa Romeo’s past.

Built in a single copy, the SWB Zagato was specially developed by a great Alfa Romeo collector. During the presentation of the vehicle, the boss of Alfa Romeo specified that a high-performance car will also be launched in the near future. We will therefore have to stay on the lookout in 2023 to find out about this car, which will probably be built in several copies!
