The Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV will be eligible for government rebates

While the luxury subcompact SUV segment has been in full swing for a few years, Alfa Romeo slow to enter. Although the Tonal was unveiled almost a year ago, it is still long overdue on Canadian soil. Its marketing is nevertheless becoming more and more concrete since the manufacturer has communicated its prices, confirming at the same time that the declination plug-in hybrid will be eligible for government rebates.

A plug-in hybrid

At $54,995, excluding freight and PDI of $2,095, the base price of theAlfa Romeo Tonale PHEV remains below the maximum eligibility threshold for the two government rebates. Indeed, in its press release, Stellantis mentions that the vehicle will be able to qualify for the federal rebate which could reach $5,000 on the purchase or long-term lease of a new vehicle since its base price is under $55,000.

However, nothing specifies the amount of financial assistance that will be granted. At the federal level, the maximum rebate for plug-in hybrid vehicles is granted to models that have an electric range of more than 50 kilometres. Since the approved range for the vehicle has not yet been announced, and the manufacturer reports a range of “more than 48 kilometres”, it remains possible that the rebate is only $2,500, i.e. the amount reserved for plug-in hybrids with a range of less than 50 kilometres.

Provincially, the rebate is offered for vehicles with a base price of less than $65,000 and is scaled by battery size, not range. Although nothing has been advertised or confirmed, the 15+ kilowatt-hour battery does qualify it for the maximum provincial rebate of $5,000.

This version will be powered by an entirely new engine in North America. It is made up of a turbocharged 4-cylinder with a displacement of 1.3 litres, an engine that has technical similarities with the one found under the hood of a Jeep Renegade. A 90 kilowatt (122 horsepower) electric motor powered by a 15.5 kilowatt-hour battery accompanies it, for a total combined output of 285 horsepower. Power is sent to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. The electric autonomy is announced at 48 kilometers.

A less expensive classic version

Unsurprisingly, the version with conventional technical motorization will be sold at a lower price. The buyer of an Alfa Romeo Tonale with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine rated at 256 horsepower can get away with a base price of $44,995, excluding freight and delivery charges. of $2,095.

The two engines will be offered in two versions, the basic Sprint and the better equipped Veloce. The Veloce commands a premium price of $2,500 in the case of the 2.0-liter engine, while the premium is $3,500 in the case of the plug-in hybrid.

The arrival of the Alfa Romeo Tonale will be in the coming weeks on the Canadian market.
