Father of the “Lean” mode of production, Toyota remained the manufacturer that sold the most vehicles globally in 2022. This production technique aimed at focusing the energy of workers and factories on efficiency must probably be effective, because the Toyota group has produced 10,483,024 vehicles in the world.
Stable production
Despite the problems with the supply of microprocessors and the delays in delivery linked to the various sanitary measures, Toyota has managed to maintain production very similar to that of 2021. The Japanese manufacturer had produced 10,495,548 vehicles in 2021, or 12,000 vehicles of more than in 2022. The 10,483,024 million vehicles produced by the Toyota group also include those of brands affiliated with the manufacturer, i.e. Lexus, Daihatsu and Hino. This slight drop of 0.1% in sales demonstrates the stability of the manufacturer’s sales.
The year 2023 may change this data, because Toyota is currently suffering from a shortage of auto parts. Like many manufacturers, Toyota must stop production at one of its factories to make up for this shortage of parts. Toyota’s plant in the Czech Republic will be closed from January 31 until the end of February. The Toyota Aygo X and Yaris, sold in other markets, will not be assembled for 1 month, risking a slight reduction in the manufacturer’s production.
The world number 2, the group volkswagen, sold 8,300,000 vehicles in 2022. This is a decrease in sales of 7% compared to 2021. 2022 is a rather disappointing year for the German manufacturer, which is experiencing one of its worst sales years. The war in Ukraine, a country where several components are manufactured, and strict health measures in China, the manufacturer’s target market, are two causes that explain the slowdown in sales. The sinking of the Felicity Ace, a transport boat which sank in the Atlantic Ocean with more than 4,000 Volkswagen products on board, is also an element which had an effect on the group’s sales. Volkswagen was for a few years the manufacturer that sold the most vehicles in the world before leaving this place to Toyota.
Worldwide no 1, 3e in Canada
In Canada, the prize list is not the same. At the top of the list, the manufacturer Ford remains the best-selling brand in the country with 240,325 vehicles. General Motors is the second in line. GM sold 228,003 vehicles, or 2,788 vehicles more than in 2021. The manufacturer Toyota, comes in third place with 175,181 vehicles sold. By adding the 25,023 units sold by Lexus, the Toyota group sold 200,204 vehicles in Canada in 2022. In all, that’s 17,271 vehicles sold less than the previous year. However, Toyota has increased its vehicle production by 5.2% compared to 2021. 9,026,713 Toyota brand vehicles have been built worldwide for 2022.
Despite the challenges and shortages of auto parts, the Toyota group plans to build 10.6 million vehicles in 2023. Production similar to recent years, production stability far superior to other manufacturers.
