Tesla: a new giga-factory in Mexico for a next-generation model
It was yesterday, March 1, 2023, that Tesla held its annual event Investor Daya heavy presentation lasting 4 hours where the manufacturer spoke about its achievements and its current projects, while sharing some information on its ambitions.
In fact, the whole presentation revolved around the ambitious common project Master Plan 3, which aims to help the planet transition to renewable energy sources. Although very little concrete information was leaked during the presentation — even sending the company’s stock price down 5% — Tesla did confirm some interesting near-term plans, such as building a sixth giga -factory located in Mexico.
This plant will be installed in the state of Nuevo León, a few kilometers north of Monterrey. According to Tesla, this location is strategic because it is not very far from the Texas giga-factory as well as the company’s headquarters. At a distance of only 7 hours by road, the proximity of the Mexico plant will allow close collaboration with the Texan locations.
Moreover, Tesla would have even signed an agreement with the state of Nuevo León to ensure a hassle-free passage through customs. A lane dedicated to Tesla would have been set up to facilitate the transport of goods between the two giga-factories. Passers-by even captured an image of this passage, as reported by the media Electrek.
About this factory, very little information has been revealed, except for a virtual rendering. Tesla says it will be where next-generation vehicles will be built, which will be based on an all-new platform, but did not give details or dates.
According to the manufacturer, its new architecture aims to correct the defects that Tesla has suffered in recent years while considerably improving its production efficiency and thus reducing costs. Although rumors are circulating that Tesla plans to build a model smaller than the Model 3 there, none of this has been confirmed by the manufacturer.
