A hydrofoil boat developed in partnership with Polestar
It is common to see a car manufacturer partner with a company specializing in another field to develop a product. There are several examples of partnerships, such as Ford and Legoland who collaborated on the design of a Ford F-150 Lightning completely made of legos. Although some associations are more crazy, others are on the contrary focused on sharing knowledge, and this is exactly the case of the manufacturer Polestar and the Swedish boat builder Candela who revealed a electric hydrofoil boat combining the know-how of both companies.
A natural association
Candela is a company specializing in the manufacture of electric boats. The particularity of the boats from this company lies in the fact that they use hydrofoil technology. This technology allows the boat to sail above the water thanks to a system of supporting wings connected to the hull of the boat. From a certain speed and once in the air, the frictional drag applied to the hull of the boat is greatly reduced, which allows the boat to perform better and consume less energy.
The nautical company has been developing and building hydrofoils for several years. Candela’s boats are powered by Polestar batteries and charging technology. This association between the two Swedish companies has enabled Candela to power its electric hydrofoils with high-performance technology, according to Candela. Indeed, several of the company’s boats use the same battery found in the Polestar 2. This is also the case of the Candela C-8, a luxury hydrofoil. Equipped with a 75 kilowatt electric motor powered by a 69 kilowatt-hour battery, the C-8 offers a range of 57 nautical miles, or 105 kilometres. This boat is also able to accelerate briskly while being very comfortable, according to Candela.
A Candela boat, the Polestar style
To continue to grow their partnership, Polestar and Candela have worked closely together to create the Candela C-8 Polestar. Working on the basis of the Candela C-8, Polestar has created a unique edition of this electric hydrofoil. Indeed, the automaker has applied its stylistic signature to craft this edition. According to the two companies, the electric hydrofoil is the very expression of Scandinavian luxury. As it displays a solid gray color on the outside, the C-8 Polestar is recognizable by the addition of gold colored elements, the same color used for the performance editions of Polestar cars.
Once deployed out of the water, the gold-colored lift wings recall at first glance the tones assigned to the automaker. Inside, gray is dominant, but it is paler. Composed of many materials and textiles unique to this edition, the C-8 Polestar is minimalist and chic, according to Candela.
The boat seats have been specially developed for the edition. Borrowed directly from Polestar vehicles, the seats offer an exceptional degree of comfort, according to Candela. Moreover, according to the company, the seats allow you to live an experience of calm and singular zenitude when driving an electric hydrofoil.
The first examples of the Candela C-8 Polestar will be delivered around June 2024. The boat has a selling price of $612,000 and will be built directly at the Candela factory in Stockholm, Sweden.
