Subaru Outback Wilderness gets cosmetic updates for 2024

This is already the fifth model year for the Subaru Outback of the sixth generation, which arrived for the 2020 model year. While all the regular versions received styling updates last year, the wilderness had remained the same. It is, however, its turn to go under the knife for 2024, since it receives aesthetic retouching which harmonizes it better with the rest of the range.

Be aware, however, that the changes are minor. They are concentrated in the front part, which sees its bumper and grille being redesigned to incorporate larger dummy air intakes. The rest of the body remains the same, with its gold-colored tricks, 17-inch wheels and high ground clearance.

Beneath the bodywork, however, is a major change. Due to a supply issue related to the situation in Russia, the skid plates under the engine and the rear differential are discontinued. The buyer who wishes to have one installed will have to go through the accessories catalog, or even in the aftermarket. Subaru Canada gives no indication of when these parts, important for the Wilderness off-road version, will be back.

The other modifications concern the addition of the Harman Kardon audio system with 12 speakers for the Wilderness and Onyx versions. Also, all 2024 Outbacks benefit from the wide-angle single camera placed at the top of the windshield. This improves the efficiency and performance of the EyeSight driver assistance system.

Price increase

Even if, until now, the manufacturer with the starry logo had managed to maintain the prices of its vehicles at levels similar to those of past years, we feel a change of strategy on this side. We first saw it with the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, whose prices have climbed, and we also see it with the 2024 version of the Outback.

2024 2023 Difference

Limited XT $47,803 $46,303 $1500
Prime XT $49,903 $48,703 $1200

The price difference therefore varies from $1,200 to $2,100 depending on the version. The two versions most affected are the Onyx and Wilderness, which nevertheless see their equipment being improved, in particular with the change which affects the audio chain.

For the rest, the 2024 Subaru Outback continues to offer the 2.5-litre, 182-hp 4-cylinder for the first four trim levels. Upgrading to the Wilderness and XT models, buyers get the 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder rated at 260 horsepower. For all versions, the continuously variable automatic transmission is standard, to send power to all four wheels through the full-time all-wheel drive.

The 2024 Subaru Outback will arrive at dealerships shortly.
