The Mazda MX-30 persists in Canada even if it is discontinued in the United States

Many observers and potential consumers scoffed at the Mazda MX-30 when he arrived almost two years ago. The autonomy of 161 kilometers, considered too low compared to its relatively high base price, overshadowed its other attributes, such as its good quality of finish. It seems that this questionable marketing got the better of the product because the Mazda MX-30 will be discontinued in the United States after 2023. However, it remains offered in Canada, where it is collecting slightly more encouraging sales figures.

Only 324 copies of the Mazda MX-30 have been sold in California, the only state where it was distributed, for the year 2022. So far, for the year 2023, only 66 copies have found buyers. In a market where 13.75 million new vehicles were sold for the year 2022, needless to say, the Mazda MX-30 was just a grain of sand.

However, in Canada, the situation is different for the Mazda MX-30. For the year 2022, 812 copies have been sold. All things considered, it therefore sold about 22 times more in Canada than in the United States for the same period.

Of these 812 copies, 646 have found takers in Quebec, a figure that is largely explained by the generous government incentives that residents of the province can receive. Indeed, a total of $12,000 from the provincial and federal governments can be deducted from the final invoice of a Mazda MX-30, which lowers its high price to a more reasonable level for buyers in La Belle Province.

In this sense, we have obtained confirmation from Chuck Reimer, director of product communications for Mazda Canada, that the Mazda MX-30 will be sold here for 2024. This means that Canada will stand apart for this vehicle, as is sometimes the case due to our market specificity compared to the American market. More details will be released closer to the 2024 model year market launch in early winter. Currently, the Mazda MX-30 GS is priced at $44,760.

Focus on hybrids

When confirming the discontinuation of the MX-30 in the United States, Mazda also emphasized that it wanted to focus on hybrid vehicles. Currently, the Mazda CX-90 is sold as a plug-in hybrid that allows for 42 kilometers of range. Another vehicle is coming with the same mechanics, but in a smaller format, the CX-70, which will eventually be unveiled. It will fit, as its name suggests, between the CX-50 and CX-90 in terms of price and size.

Speaking of CX-50, when the vehicle launched in 2022, the automaker confirmed that a hybrid-powered variant was in the plans. There is still no indication of the arrival date of this engine or what will compose it, since currently no version of a hybridized longitudinal engine exists at Mazda. Perhaps the strategic partnership with Toyota will lead to a sharing of hybrid technology? We will follow the development of this file with interest.

Finally, while the addition of a gasoline range extender, based on a rotary engine, has been announced for the MX-30 elsewhere in the world, there is still no question of importing it into Canada. However, a first Mazda electric SUV should see the light of day in 2025, according to the Canadian strategy for the implementation of electric vehicles unveiled by the manufacturer.
