It’s a matter of time before all automakers adopt the North American Charging Port (NACS) popularized by Tesla at our place. After many American, European and Asian manufacturers have followed suit, it is now the turn of Volkswagen and its sister subsidiaries Audi, Porsche and the future Scout to join the dance, as the manufacturer has just announced.
The next vehicles from the four brands will begin to adopt the NACS charging port starting in 2025. This will allow owners of these vehicles to have access to Tesla’s charging network, which is widespread in North America. The exact timeline is not yet known, and it should be clarified closer to the start date. The NACS charging port is generally considered more user-friendly and easier to use than the CCS-Combo connector, currently used by the majority of manufacturers.
For current electric motorists
Current owners of Volkswagen, Audi or Porsche vehicles currently using a CCS-Combo socket will not be left out, since the manufacturer is considering a solution for them. Whether by the development of a specific adapter or by the use of an already existing adapter, allowing the NACS terminals to be connected to a vehicle which instead uses the CCS-Combo, there will be an avenue for current owners .
As for Scout vehicles, this new brand will offer electric vehicles intended for more adventurous driving, they will be equipped as soon as they leave the NACS port factory. In fact, the first examples from this brand should arrive here in 2026, after Volkswagen’s transition to this new connector.
Volkswagen is a latecomer in adopting this charging port. It follows Ford, GM, Stellantis, Rivian, Volvo, Polestar, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Fisker, Honda, Acura, Jaguar, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce, Subaru and Toyota, all of whom have confirmed that they will be adopting this connector starting with the 2025 model year.
