Mercedes-Benz revisits the G-Class for 2025

The Class G of Mercedes-Benz has existed since 1979, and its 1D generation stretched until 2019. For 2019, we arrive with a completely new generation, but we have maintained the same ladder chassis from its beginnings. Obviously, its base has been reworked, but the essentials have remained. Aesthetically, even if only the indicator lights on the hood and the door handles have been retained, the entire body has changed. It is true that it takes a trained eye to see the differences, but they are very real.

The aesthetic

For 2025, there is no question of reviewing the G-Class from top to bottom. We are making minor but significant changes. We always find two versions with very different personalities. The base version G 550 gets a new layout of the grille, new rims ranging from 19 to 22 inches depending on the options. To improve aerodynamics by 0.55, designers and engineers added a tab above the windshield and even redesigned the A-pillars. The bumpers are also slightly reworked. Therefore, the drag coefficient is now 0.48. It’s still one of the worst in the auto industry, but at least it’s better than before.

Versions G 63 AMG benefit from similar improvements. The grille is revisited. We offer no less than 6 designs of rims from 20 to 22 inches. For 2025, the manufacturer arrives with a new set of “Offroad PRO” options which offers a wider catalog of options in terms of exterior decoration. Mercedes-Benz is proud to announce that the door handles, the same since 1979, are now equipped with keyless technology. According to the engineers, this addition was easier said than done! For a more exclusive look, it is possible to have a more imposing carbon fiber package than the current offering.

Even more premium interior

Inside, Mercedes-Benz avoids the excess of the “Hypersreen” and maintains the old 12.3-inch screens. There is a slight evolution in terms of graphic designs, but the big news is the fact that the multimedia screen is now touchscreen. The center console is redesigned for more user-friendly ergonomics. The hand falls better on the management wheel.

For better sound quality, it is now possible to have a Burmester 3D audio system on board. The cup holders and central armrests are heated, induction charging for smartphones is available, and you can have technology that makes the hood disappear when you’re off-road. At the rear, we also offer optional screens on backrest supports. Finally, as we are at the top of the Mercerdes-Benz range, the MANUFAKTUR customization workshops are expanding their offering for interior trim, but also for the exterior. There are now 40 “stock” colors, but another 20,000 additional colors are available for the modest sum of 15,000 euros ($22,000).

The mechanics

The base version G 550 has a new engine under its hood. It abandons the 4-liter turbo V8 in favor of the 3-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder. Power increases from 416 to 443 horsepower, while torque decreases from 450 pound-feet to 413. For the AMG versions, power remains at 577 horsepower, and torque, at 627 pound-feet. What’s important to highlight is the integration of the 48-volt mild-electric hybrid technology that sits between the engine and the 9-speed automatic gearbox.

Still with the AMGs, but as an option, you can obtain suspensions with AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL hydraulic anti-roll stabilization. These replace mechanical torsion bars and help reduce body roll. In this same vein, while the G-Class is king of the trails, the contribution of its suspensions improves stability and behavior on the road for more dynamism. With this option and the Offroad PRO package, two additional driving modes are added.
