Porsche Macan EV test bench | A transition at full speed

If demand is there, Porsche promises to electrify its entire range by 2030. And the German brand does not intend to wait for this deadline before delivering the goods. The Macan EV planned for the end of summer demonstrates this.

For almost a quarter of a century, the 911 has no longer represented Porsche's goodwill, only its most emblematic model. The sixty-year-old sportswoman rather serves as a common thread with the past of this German brand. It seeks to diversify its portfolio, even if it means dismaying its early followers. The Panamera (a five-door sedan), the Cayenne (a large utility vehicle) and the Taycan (100% electric) demonstrate that Porsche enjoys such an aura that it can afford (almost) everything.

Surprising decision

This introduction brings us to our main subject: the Macan. This relatively compact utility vehicle, which appeared during the 2015 model year, has been one of the brand's most popular products since its launch (along with the Cayenne). In this context, Porsche's decision to market a fully electric version of this successful model is surprising. Generally, manufacturers are rather hesitant about making such a radical change of direction. Naturally, the German firm is creating a way out. The current Macans, powered by internal combustion engines, will remain in the catalog for 2025. Afterwards? Nobody knows too well. The only clue is that the EV suffix attached to the electric Macan will disappear in 2026, we have learned.

Before going any further, let's point out that the architecture on which the Macan EV is based has nothing to do with the Macan that we have known for 10 years. The electrified version adopts a new platform. This was developed jointly with Audi, which will in turn launch it soon with the Q6 e-Tron. It will then be shared with the other luxury brands of the Volkswagen group (Bentley and Lamborghini).

For its debut on the market – it is expected in dealerships in September – the Macan EV is available in two models: 4 and Turbo. The latter is the most powerful, but is not the best choice. The 4 is more energy efficient and much less expensive, as long as you don't let yourself be tempted by the myriad of options offered. Among these, the four-wheel steering system ($2,320) seems essential to us, however, since it not only improves the stability of the vehicle, but also substantially reduces the turning circle.

A 100 kWh battery is responsible for powering two electric thrusters capable of catapulting the Macan EV much faster than all gasoline versions of the Macan. But this is not very surprising. What is, on the other hand, unlike current electric vehicles, is that the exhilaration of sporty driving is not limited to straight lines.

Benefiting from a lower center of gravity, this Porsche seats its occupants much closer to the ground (28 mm at the front and 15 mm at the rear) compared to the petrol Macan. And it shows. This utility (the question is whether it is still one) seems welded on rails.

And this can seem disconcerting to the extent that the contribution of the person in charge appears, at times, incidental. This then requires discovering new visual cues to understand a rapidly excessive pace. Especially if you use and abuse the temporary overspeed function (overboost) which triggers lightning without thunder.

It goes without saying that the battalion of electronic aids contributes to making the driving of this Porsche extremely brilliant in all situations. Precise steering to negotiate the apex of flat turns, incredibly neutral behavior and no loss of traction when exiting curves. This vehicle executes its score with mastery, not without a certain firmness, despite its weight (2405 kg). Electric enthusiasts will undoubtedly criticize it for not allowing “one pedal” driving, but Porsche seeks to preserve certain sensations.

Assets to exploit

The electric Macan adopts an appearance similar to its alter ego, but this is only in appearance. The proportions have changed. It is much more refined aerodynamically (Cd: 0.25). More spacious too. Especially for rear seat occupants, who benefit from better clearance. The trunk also gains in volume. Porsche has provided a second trunk, at the front, which can accommodate the charging cables.

The interior presentation combines traditions (impeccable driving position, ignition button on the left of the steering wheel) and the brand's latest advances. Unsurprisingly, electroluminescent panels are increasingly swallowing up dials and switches. We also wonder about the usefulness of the instrument cluster now that Porsche offers a head-up display (this reflects the most relevant information at the bottom of the windshield) with augmented reality. You can not stop progress. Nor the personalization. As proof, 72 colors make up the Macan EV palette. Of this number, 59 are optional…
