With government subsidies helping, these three electric vehicles are below the $40,000 mark

Fiat 500e

Consumption: 2.1 Le/100 km

The Fiat 500e is the most affordable electric vehicle currently available on the market. Although this model retains a physiognomy similar to that of the gasoline 500 previously offered, this fully electrified version is longer, wider and taller. It is also based on a completely different architecture. A 42 kWh battery powers its electric motor capable of producing the equivalent of 117 hp and 142 lb-ft of torque. Due to its very advantageous weight/power ratio, the little Italian sparkles in the city, but runs out of steam on long journeys due to its low range (217 km).

Mazda MX-30

Consumption: 2.6 Le/100 km

The low range (160 km) of the Mazda MX-30 limits its scope to urban or peri-urban use. For some consumers, that's enough. The MX-30 includes a compact and lightweight battery (310 kg) in its chassis. This is designed to be recharged quickly on a level 2 terminal. Its slightly twisted lines and its antagonistically opening doors for access to the rear seats allow it to get out of the row. Original in design, the interior is also distinguished by the chic of the materials – many are recycled –, the simplicity of the lines and a commendable attention to detail.

Nissan Leaf

Consumption: 2.1 Le/100 km and 2.2 Le/100 km (depending on battery size)

Along with Mitsubishi's i-Miev, the Leaf was one of the pioneers of the electric revolution. Since its redesign in 2018, little has changed. Therefore, this Nissan represents a safe offer if not the most exciting. Its motor, which is both silent and flexible, is powered by a 40 kWh or 62 kWh battery. The latter gives it a range of more than 350 km. Its road behavior and light steering invite us to adopt a wise and quiet driving style.
