Is hybrid powertrain doomed?
The Quebec government announced in November 2020 the ban on the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles in 2035. But it is as clearly stated as plug-in hybrid models (combination of an internal combustion engine and an electric unit) are among the zero-emission vehicles that will be offered at dealerships. This means that all vehicles with a thread on the wheel will be able to remain in the catalog after 2035.
Therefore, the classic hybrid engine is doomed to disappear. The plug-in hybrid will survive it, but regulatory requirements remain to be defined. The government could be tempted to legislate on the size of the battery or the electric autonomy.

Although they run on gasoline, plug-in hybrid vehicles emit half the amount of CO, according to several studies.2 per kilometer than a “classic” hybrid (read wireless) and three times less than a traditional gasoline model. Therefore, plug-in hybrids effectively contribute to lowering average greenhouse gas emissions. They reassure motorists who fear the absence of a network of public terminals over long distances while giving them the good conscience of not polluting in urban areas. In addition, the constantly evolving electric range is largely sufficient to cover the 40 km or so that they cover on average on a daily basis.
The theory is good, but the practice may be less so. Two recently published European studies note that some motorists seek to benefit from government bonuses and privileges associated with these vehicles, but only recharge them occasionally. Worse still, some would abuse the “recharge” function, which allows the battery to be recharged using a gasoline engine… It remains to be seen whether the government will be able to regulate such a practice.
As it stands, this technology represents an effective way to introduce all-electric to consumers who are still reluctant. It also makes it possible to circumvent the difficulties experienced by many city dwellers who cannot have a terminal installed at home.
