True to form, Honda unpack the other variants of the Civic a few months after the sedan was presented. Unsurprisingly, this is the hatchback version, one that offers a greater degree of versatility, but which also promises to put more emphasis on sportiness. Several new features, including a lightweight tailgate, are in the game.
Now that the coupe is no longer offered, it is the hatchback that will carry the torch of sporty driving in the family. Civic. If you are wondering what the next Civic Type R will look like, know that it will be based on the vehicle you see on screen. There is also the Si declination, but it is not yet clear whether the Civic hatchback will be offered in this configuration.
From a technical standpoint, it uses all of the same engines as the sedan. The entry-level engine is therefore a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque, while a second 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. is proposed. This one unboxes the same 180 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Consumers will be able to choose between a continuously variable transmission (CVT) or, to satisfy driving enthusiasts, a 6-speed manual transmission.
Honda also claims that it was redesigned compared to the last generation so that it is more precise, faster and above all, more pleasant to maneuver. However, we will have to put it to the test to confirm these claims.
Shorter than the sedan by some 124 millimeters, the Civic hatchback has a recalibration of its suspension so that it focuses more on sporty driving. Honda also took the opportunity to review the structural rigidity of the vehicle, which allows it to be 19% more torsionally stiff than the sedan.
Obviously, it’s the hatchback configuration that makes this Civic the most versatile in the family. Honda has also made sure to enlarge its opening by some 40 millimeters. The tailgate itself is also made of composites, making it lighter than its predecessor. Honda has yet to disclose cargo space figures, however.
The interior of the Civic hatchback is essentially identical to that of the sedan, except for subtle changes in the color schemes and materials used. Two new body colors will also be added to the catalog, Boost Blue – which was introduced on the Civic Type R in 2020 – and Smoky Mauve.
