The 2022 Genesis G80 Sport is reborn in a new style
It will soon be six years since Genesis separated from Hyundai to become a full-fledged entity, and a lot has happened in such a short time. Not only has Genesis found its visual identity, but it now offers a full lineup of compact, mid-size and full-size sedans, as well as two surprisingly capable SUVs. To underline this rapid progression, Hyundai’s luxury division presents one of the brand’s first models: the Genesis G80 Sport.
Formerly based on a crude Hyundai Genesis that had been revamped a few times to remain relevant to consumers, the G80 was completely redesigned in 2021 to better align with the automaker’s new styling identity. Genesis therefore takes the opportunity to bring back the Sport version.
Like the G70 and GV70 Sport, the G80 Sport incorporates a slightly sportier grille, incorporating larger openings towards the bottom of the bumper. New model-exclusive rims and a more dynamic rear end are also featured. The Sport stands out above all from other versions with its enormous brake calipers painted in red (or black) and its finish details covered in glossy dark chrome.
A new body color that Genesis calls Cavendish Red – in reference to the red cliffs of the same name located in Prince Edward Island – is exclusive to the Sport version.
The interior of this G80 also receives a few revisions to emphasize sportiness. We also note a new steering wheel, a brushed metal finish and the option of being able to dress the interior in Seville red as well as a combination of black with gray or red stitching. It will also be possible to choose between a V or diamond pattern for the seat coverings.
Genesis has yet to confirm anything technically, other than the addition of the directional rear wheels. We can also see the 4WD badge on its trunk, a sign that the all-wheel drive will be there.
Remember, however, that the old G80 Sport stood out from other versions by its suspension and recalibrated brakes as well as by its extra power. At the time of this writing, the most powerful engine offered by the G80 was a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque.
Could the G80 Sport be driven by an even more powerful version of this engine? We will know more as it approaches its official market, scheduled for late summer.
