Joe Biden wants 50% of vehicles sold in US to be electrified

President Joe biden has just unveiled a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. He is tackling vehicle emissions by signing an executive order stating that by 2030, 50% of new vehicles sold in the United States will be electrified.

In the presence of several executives of the major automakers, Joe Biden said that the future of the automobile is electric, and that there can be no turning back. The announcement was made on the White House lot in front of two electrified SUVs: the GMC Hummer EV, GM’s new electric SUV, and the Jeep Wranger 4xe, a plug-in hybrid version of the famous Jeep.

Its electrification plan foresees that 40 to 50% of new vehicles sold will have to be electric, plug-in hybrids or hydrogen fuel cells, which includes models like the Toyota Mirai.

To do this, Joe Biden mentions that it will be necessary to invest massively in the development of these technologies and in the transformation of factories.

The main American automakers, GM, Ford and Stellantis, have given their support to the measures announced. In a joint statement, they mentioned that the Biden plan is in line with their philosophy of producing zero-emission vehicles.

Other manufacturers like Volkswagen, BMW, Honda, Toyota and Volvo have also given their support. It goes without saying that a manufacturer like Tesla welcomes this announcement.

According to many, the goal should not be too difficult to achieve since several manufacturers had already announced that they wanted to market only electrified vehicles by 2025 – 2030. Several others have already mentioned wanting to cease production of internal combustion engines entirely.

According to specialists, change in the United States is already underway, pushed by manufacturers like Tesla. According to the firm IHS Markit, 32% of vehicles sold in the United States by 2030 will be electric, 4.2% will be plug-in hybrids.
