Some updates for the 2022 Infiniti QX80
With the arrival of new, more modern players in the full-size luxury SUV category – such as the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and Jeep Grand Wagoneer – we tend to forget the existence of the Infiniti QX80. Whatever one thinks of this now archaic model, Infiniti is bringing it some practical updates for the 2022 model year.
In reality, the updates only affect the central part of the dashboard and the multimedia system which, it must be emphasized, was in great need of love. Like the Nissan Armada on which the Infiniti QX80 rests, Infiniti’s fat guy gets the same 12.3-inch screen as its cousin as well as a brand new interface and new physical controls. Gone are the old, pseudo-friendly two-screen system, and make way for something simpler and much more efficient and modern.
Obviously, this system includes the most recent technologies in terms of connectivity, such as a Wifi terminal as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, only Apple CarPlay can sync to the wireless system. A navigation system now comes standard as well as connectivity services InTouch from the manufacturer. This system operates through touch-sensitive controls, or by means of a thumbwheel located in the center console.
Infiniti also takes the opportunity to review the air conditioning controls and integrate a storage compartment for the phone in the central part. It incorporates wireless induction charging, offered as standard.
Nothing changes in terms of design, interior and mechanics. The only engine offered is a 5.6-liter V8 that develops 400 horsepower and produces 413 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission.
What is the future of this model?
Although it lags seriously behind the competition from a technological standpoint, the QX80 remains a reliable, capable vehicle that continues to sell well against its rivals. However, this is a rather niche category. With some 17,000 copies sold in Canada and the United States annually, it’s not the QX80 that ensures Infiniti’s survival.
Nothing has yet been said about a new version of the model. We therefore do not know if Infiniti intends to modernize, even keep the QX80 in its range. Seeing things go for the automaker, it could even be that Nissan’s luxury division will be completely dissolved within five years.
