Mercedes-Benz launches EQE, the electric equivalent of the E-Class
Mercedes-Benz has no intention of sleeping soundly when it comes to electric vehicles and the most recent IAA Mobility Exhibition in Munich, which kicked off last week, is stark proof of this. In addition to many SUV models, the manufacturer has launched a sedan that comes, in a way, to take up the strategy of the EQS to apply it to a smaller size. So this is where the sedan comes into play EQE, or the electrical equivalent of Class E.
If the style of the sedan Mercedes-Benz EQE sounds familiar to you is that it’s pretty much the same as the EQS large sedan, which launched almost 6 months ago. The EQE is however slightly smaller and offers a plunging front end, but nevertheless shorter and more aggressive. The lateral line remains faithful to theEQS with the large plunging glass surface, while the rear also sports a light across the board. Be aware, however, that unlike the EQS, the EQE does not have a tailgate; instead, we opted for a traditional safe.
The interior is so similar to the EQS sedan that it feels straight out of the same mold. The dashboard is of the “Hyperscreen” type, composed of three screens – one for the instrumentation, one for the multimedia system in the center and another in front of the front passenger – for a downright spectacular effect.
Similar mechanical elements
Another element that links EQS and EQE is the EVA2 platform, which is the same for both models. The first version to arrive on the market will be the EQE 350, whose rear engine will give it a power of 288 horsepower. Other versions are to be expected, including an all-wheel drive version and an AMG performance version. This is a marketing strategy similar to that used by Mercedes-Benz with the EQS (and even gasoline models).
On the other hand, the EQE’s 90.8 kilowatt-hour usable battery is smaller than that of the EQS, which tops out at 107.8 kilowatt-hours. According to the very optimistic WLTP test cycle, the range should reach 665 km, a figure that will be revised downwards with North American EPA standards.
Embedded technology
The Mercedes-Benz EQE will obviously offer an array of luxury and performance features. For example, the sedan will optionally offer a system that rotates the rear wheels up to 10 degrees to improve handling and maneuverability in parking spaces. Several driver assistance systems will also be offered, allowing some semi-autonomous driving capability.
The date of arrival on the North American market has still not been announced. It makes sense, however, to assume that it will arrive in the second half of 2022 as a 2023 model. More details will be announced closer to the arrival date.
