To update your GPS for free, the OpenStreetMap project allows you to download maps and transfer them to your system without any cost. This Open Source software is actually a database of free maps, updated by volunteer contributors. The downloaded maps are compatible with different navigation systems.
SYNC Services is by subscription. It is $60 per year, payable by credit card. That said, some vehicles come with a complimentary SYNC Services account, if you have a 2014 (or previous) vehicle with MyFord Touch, you have a complimentary 3-year Services account.

Why are Sync Services no longer available?
Why was SYNC Services discontinued? SYNC Services relied on technology that is no longer being supported. While this technology was useful when the feature launched, it is no longer the best way to support owner needs. We will continue to focus efforts on new technologies.
How do I know if my Ford Sync needs updating?

2. Visit the SYNC Software Updates page.
3. If you see a notification that says, “You have recently downloaded an update,” choose Confirm Update. You’ll be instructed on how to report your last successful installation so that we can keep you informed when new updates are available to you.
