Ford expands its pickup truck offering with the unveiling of the Maverick 2022. Its key components: AWD or AWD, base hybrid and up to 4,000 pounds of towing capacity.
After the F Series and the Ranger, Ford will offer a new pickup truck in its range over the next year, the Ford Maverick. In terms of style, we clearly see airs of “mini-F-150”, but of the older generation. This aspect is particularly striking on the configuration of the optical units at the front. Everything is in the tradition of Ford to show the muscular side of its pickups with more angular features than curves.
In the case of the Maverick, considering that there have been no small vans in the range for decades, and that an old name is being reintroduced, the stylists could have played a little more daring. Generally speaking, the Maverick only offers one body configuration, which is a short 4.5-foot box and a 4-door cabin. The body could be equipped with accessories such as a 110-volt outlet, lighting or, even, side rails for additional fixings.
For the moment, there are three levels of equipment: XL, XLT and Lariat. To this is also added the FX4 package intended for slightly more demanding off-road activities. As for the size of the rims, they will vary between 17 and 18 inches depending on the model.
The cabin can accommodate up to 5 people in an environment that seems quite spacious. According to Ford, the target clientele mainly targets the economy while remaining connected with their world. For this reason, there is a modem on board, an 8-inch screen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and, for connectivity, MyFord App is added to the list. As it should be on a new generation model, all the driving aids and aids of the CoPilot Assist program are obtained as standard or as an option.
Aiming above all at pleasure before work, the Maverick offers a cabin full of tricks such as the sunglass holder behind the multimedia screen or the storage space under the seat. On the other hand, there are some accessories that we understand less like the cup holder right in the legs of the rear passenger. Although we have not yet got our hands on the Maverick, in light of the images, we notice the presence of a lot of plastic for the trim.
Under the hood, the standard engine is hybrid and consists mainly of the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder from the Ford Escape Hybrid. It gives a combined power of 191 horsepower and a torque of 155 drunken feet. Unlike the Escape, the Maverick Hybrid is strict traction. This engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). As a result of these technological choices, the 2.5-liter offers a towing capacity of only 909 kilos (2,000 pounds). Ford, however, announces an average fuel consumption of 5.9 liters / 100 kilometers.
To have an experience closer to the traditional van, a second mechanical is available as an option. Once again, we dig into the catalog of the Escape with its turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder powertrain with an output of 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. We abandon the CVT for an 8-speed automatic. It should be noted that this engine can be ordered in full or in traction. With the AWD and the optional towing package, it will then be possible to tow up to 1,818 kilograms (4,000 pounds).
For now, Ford is not revealing all the prices of the Maverick Hybrid 2022. To attract attention, it is confirmed that the opening price will be $ 25,900. Obviously, the price will be established according to the level of equipment, engine, cog and other options. The 2022 Ford Maverick will hit dealerships in the fall according to the automaker’s current plans. Even though this segment had not existed for decades, Ford is reviving this category at the same time that Hyundai arrives with the Santa Cruz.
