2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E: Even more usable battery capacity

Ford continues to be on a roll with its electric Mustang Mach-E, which has posted some pretty impressive sales figures since its arrival earlier this year, despite the pandemic and a shortage of semiconductors. Nearly 20,000 units have already been sold in Canada and the United States, proving that it was a good idea to put the Mustang badge on an electric SUV. To keep the Mach-E attractive to consumers, Ford is making some improvements for 2022.

The most substantial change is in the usable capacity of the two batteries offered. They go from 68 to 70 kilowatt hours, and from 88 to 91 kilowatt hours.

Does this improvement provide an increase in range? Yes and no. In reality, the EPA has no plans to re-evaluate the Mach-E, and Ford has not projected any estimates. However, it would be perfectly acceptable to assume that this slight increase in usable capacity would allow the vehicle to log an additional 15 miles on a full charge.

We may also see an improvement in battery performance in cold weather. However, we will have to test the vehicle to confirm this.

The other new feature is the addition of the 2-motor 4WD option for the California Route 1 model. This model also comes standard with heated seats and steering wheel. On the Mach-E GT side, the black painted roof, an option that used to cost $850, will now come standard.

Finally, new body colors will be offered, such as Ice White Edition. A new blue named Blue Silver Metallic replaces the iconic silver. Cyber Orange and Eye-catching Blue, which were only offered on the GT, will now be offered on the regular Mach-E.

Ford has not yet announced whether the range upgrade will be done via a remote update for 2021 model owners. Also, if you’re interested in a 2022 Mach-E, you’ll have to be patient, as the first deliveries won’t happen until March 2022.

Ford of Canada has not yet confirmed the price range for the 2022 Mach-E. Ford’s U.S. site lists a US$500 increase for the Premium model and a US$375 increase for the California Route 1 variant. The Mach-E GT, however, shows a price reduction of $1,005. We’ll see if prices follow suit in our market.
