A subtle update for the 2022 Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is an intriguing SUV. Much less sophisticated than its main competition and not offering such a high volume, it remains a safe bet due to its excellent reliability record, eye-catching design and commendable handling. These are the qualities that have allowed it to slip into the list of our Best vehicles in 2021. For 2022, Mazda is bringing it a good update. The changes are subtle, but still substantial.

Faithful to its habits of purifying its designs, Mazda brings only very subtle alterations to the already successful appearance of the CX-5. At first glance, nothing seems to have changed; however, a closer observation will reveal a more imposing grille incorporating “wings” at its lower part which extend towards the headlights.

The bottom of the bumper as well as the main air intake have also been changed, which further streamlines the front of the vehicle. The rear receives similar modifications, including slightly redesigned LED lights. In addition, the Signature declination eliminates the contours of fenders and black rocker panels. It replaces them with parts painted the same color as the vehicle.

Technical details

The biggest novelties can be found under the body of the CX-5. Improvements have been made to the shock absorber control structure to increase chassis stiffness and thereby reduce unwanted vibrations. Mazda therefore promises a clear improvement in the soundproofing of the passenger compartment. However, we will have to test the vehicle to confirm these claims.

The other update includes i-Activ all-wheel drive as standard across the lineup. Mazda says it has fine-tuned the programming of the 6-speed gearbox and installed additional driving modes, without however specifying exactly what it is. Remember that the current CX-5 only offered Sport mode. An Eco mode, perhaps? To be continued.

Some cabin and even engine revisions

As for the passenger compartment, we are dealing with some alterations in terms of materials used and color schemes. The CX-5, especially in its Signature version, was already very well assembled and presented an impeccable interior in terms of finish. Everything should therefore continue in the same vein.

The CX-5 receives the manufacturer’s new multimedia interface that is also found in the CX-30 and Mazda3.

Absolutely nothing has changed in terms of the engines offered. This Mazda still uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. Then comes the turbocharged version of this engine which delivers up to 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on 93-octane fuel. On regular fuel, this engine actually produces an output of. 227 horsepower and produces 310 pound-feet of torque. Unfortunately, no electrified version is yet in sight for this model.

The changes to the Mazda CX-5 will take effect for the 2022 model year; and the model will be offered in dealerships across the country early next year. Until then, the RPM team will make sure to test the model to give you their impressions.
