Chevrolet | GM to unveil electric Silverado in January
General Motors (GM) took advantage of its annual investor day to set a date for the unveiling of one of its most anticipated models. The electric version of its full-size Chevrolet Silverado pickup will make its first public release during the Consumer Electronics Show on January 5.
Following the unveiling of the electric GMC Hummer in October 2020, this new model will be the second non-gasoline-powered pickup truck presented by General Motors. Details on this achievement are scattered for the moment, but we know that the target maximum range is 644 km, which is significantly more than the 483 km promised by the Ford F-150 Lightning.
Based on an Ultium chassis developed expressly to be combined with electric motors, this Silverado will be entitled to an optional four-wheel steering system to ensure greater agility. It will also have a fixed glass roof, a detail that no doubt reminds Tesla, which is still working to prepare its competition personified by its Cybertruck.
In parallel with this announcement, GM has promised the marketing of a new electric crossover sold under the Chevrolet banner that will command a starting price of US $ 30,000 (CAN $ 38,000).
An even more advanced semi-autonomous driving system called Ultra Cruise for more luxury GM vehicles will also be introduced in 2023. It can operate without driver intervention in 95% of scenarios, and will benefit from updates through ‘a computing cloud.
It will be based on a combination of cameras, radars and Lidar remote sensing to ensure its operation. It is argued that eventually, it will be able to operate on all asphalt roads in Canada and the United States, which the current Super Cruise system does not have the capacity to do.
