Chevrolet Silverado 2022: New interior and more muscular 4-cylinder
All were unanimous about the Chevrolet Silverado newer generation when it arrived in 2019: the interior was disappointing, especially compared to the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150. Four years later, Chevrolet is reworking the Silverado for 2022, a truck that now sports a drastically redesigned interior and a 4-cylinder engine with more torque.
Even if the exterior presentation of the Chevrolet Silverado was not a problem, for 2022 the builder is improving the storefront to give it a more luxurious look. No more separate turn signals placed under the headlights; they are now integrated with daytime running lights and boomerang, now bigger and with progressive lighting. The radiator grille is also revised, displaying the brand’s logo in a higher central position, which is now larger. The bumper is also reworked, being more elegant, especially on the version High Country.
Redesigned interior
The interior, however, is the part that needed the biggest change, and that’s where GM concentrated his efforts. Chevrolet uses a strategy adopted between 2007 and 2013 by offering two different interiors depending on the version.
The LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, ZR2, LTZ and High Country versions can say goodbye to the “Stormtrooper” type presentation and welcome to a much more modern presentation. We are entitled to a tangle of lines and textures, and especially more elegant materials, particularly in the High Country version which offers open-pore woodwork and stainless steel elements.
At the top of this new dashboard is a standard 13.2-inch new screen, larger than that of the equivalent Ram and Ford. This integrates all the functions of the vehicle via an interface embellished with Google software, such as navigation by Google Maps. The system is compatible with online updates and always offers WiFi connectivity. It sits above easier-to-access physical buttons and classic climate controls.
In front of the driver is a 12.3-inch screen as standard with fully configurable instrumentation. The driver can choose from several different presentation styles.
The WT, Custom, and Custom Trail Boss trims retain the old instrument panel, in large part because GM considers them to be primarily for work, not comfort. These versions do not receive any major changes inside.
Technological changes
Even though GM has stayed the course with the column shifter, 2022 is the year it changes its mind. In the versions fitted with captain’s chairs, it is replaced by a compact electronic lever located in the console, which always returns to its position after manipulation. GM claims that it saves space in the console compared to a traditional lever and above all that it brings a touch of modernism and luxury to the interior. The center console has therefore been completely redesigned and is more functional than before.
Another new feature is the integration of the SuperCruise semi-autonomous driving system, a first for the Silverado. This allows the driver to take the wheel off the wheel on compatible highways, as long as he maintains the view to the outside to resume driving at any time. The system also works with a trailer in the rear and is capable of making lane changes automatically.
4-cylinder vitamin
In all cases, the engines remain the same, with the exception of the improved 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. We reworked the crankshaft, connecting rods, ball bearings and added aluminum reinforcements to the engine block to allow it to deliver more torque. Power therefore still remains at 310 hp, but torque climbs to 410 lb-ft, an increase of 62 lb-ft compared to the 2021 edition which peaked at 348 lb-ft.
The machine is still paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the programming of which has been revised. According to the folks at GM, the result is a smoother, smoother ride, but not necessarily faster. The difference will be felt when towing or even when picking up, two aspects which are influenced by the engine torque.
A word about the Duramax inline 6-cylinder diesel engine which does not change, but whose capacities do change. Modifications have been made to the chassis, suspension and rear differential so that the towing capacity of trucks equipped with them increases by 4,000 pounds to 13,300 pounds in a two-wheel drive configuration.
the Chevrolet Silverado 2022 will arrive in concession during the first quarter of 2022, despite the shortage of microchips. More details will be announced on the pricing of the different versions as the model arrives.
