Chevrolet unveils COPO Camaro with 9.3-liter big block

While my colleague William Clavey raised that the future of the Chevrolet Camaro may lie with a possibly electric four-door car, GM had other, shorter-term plans. Indeed, the manufacturer has just unveiled an ultimate version intended for drag racing of the Camaro, the COPO. It is equipped with a “big block” with a displacement of 572 cubic inches, or the equivalent of 9.3 liters.

Although the real power of the Chevrolet COPO Camaro 2022 with engine 572 is not yet officially unveiled, it is safe to believe that it will blow your mind: cast iron block, aluminum cylinder heads, forged crankshaft and connecting rod and forged aluminum pistons are the main elements of the engine. For information, it has also recently been possible to purchase this engine as an accessory; it then produces 727 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 680 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm.

The Chevrolet COPO Camaro is also offered with two less powerful engines. The first is a 350 cubic inch (5.7 liter) V8 with supercharger, good for 580 horsepower approved by the National Hot Rod Administration (NHRA). The second is a naturally aspirated 427 (6.8-liter) V8 rated at 470 horsepower by the NHRA. All COPO Camaros are equipped with a TH400 three-speed automatic transmission.

If you intend to get one for the road, you are on the wrong track. Indeed, this ultraspecial version cannot be registered. It can therefore only be used on an acceleration track. However, it arrives very well equipped for such use with its carbon fiber hood and anti-lift bars. Buyers can also equip their COPO Camaro with a traction weight in the trunk or even a parachute to slow the car as standard.

The production of this COPO Camaro will not be done in limited quantities as was the case previously. Buyers can book it on a first come, first served basis. At this time, availability in Canada is not confirmed; we are still awaiting a response from GM Canada to this effect. In the United States, the Chevrolet COPO Camaro with the 572 engine will sell for a base price of US $ 105,000.
