Competition from the Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback has earned a solid reputation in the all-wheel-drive segment. The Audi A4 Allroad, the Volvo V60 Cross Country and even its cousin, the Subaru Forester, too.

Audi A4 Allroad

Price: from $52,300

Without pun intended, the Audi A4 Allroad is today at a crossroads. We already know that this version of the A4 will be completely overhauled in a few months. That said, in its current form, the Allroad still has a lot to offer. Compared to an Outback Premier XT, the Allroad offers a more refined experience (driving and presentation), a more generous warranty and more dynamic handling. On the other hand, the German is less spacious (passengers and luggage) and offers a price/accessory ratio less competitive than that of the Japanese.

Outback enthusiasts probably don’t see the Forester as a natural contender. Yet these two vehicles share the same architecture, the same basic powertrain and substantially the same safety advancements. And, despite its more generous dimensions (wheelbase, width), the Outback is hardly more spacious than the Forester. And the latter is sold at a better price. We opt for the Forester then? No, if you are looking for a more functional trunk and a softer road feel.

Attractive as it is, the V60 Cross Country fails to justify the sum it commands. It turns out to be a more soothing tourer to drive, more agile – although its turning circle is as large as that of a truck – and offers a better feeling than that of the Outback. Just like the latter, we would have liked its direction to provide more sensations, and its engine to display a little more tone when moving it. On the other hand, all categories of vehicles combined, it is difficult to find seats as comfortable as those of this family. Generously padded, they offer good support and above all allow you to travel hundreds of kilometers without getting tired.
