Details take shape for the electric Ram 1500

Unlike Ford and GM, RAM always delays revealed its electric van. We know that the model will be unveiled by the end of the year, but clearly, the manufacturer is taking its time to stir up the passions of brand enthusiasts. Not only will Ram have an electric pickup, it looks like hydrogen could be added to the lineup.

Ram continues the slow stripping of his electric van. Although the complete drawing still seems far away, we discover a little more each month. In Ram’s latest video post on YouTube, we essentially discover the LED lighting that will provide the visual signature of this electrified version. If we trust the images, in addition to the LED strips in the optical blocks, the Ram logo will also be illuminated and will adopt its own design to distinguish it from the rest of the range.

From the front angle, we also notice that the pickup will have strong features with a sculpted hood, angular front fenders as well as a roof with two domes. By the same token, we assume that the addition of a sunroof will be difficult to integrate. On the other hand, the optics of a fixed panoramic roof cannot be excluded. However, we will have to wait before its full unveiling, which is expected by the end of the year.

On the technical side, rumors are rife. Like the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Ram will be built on a ladder platform. Early assessments suggest that this base would be able to integrate battery sets ranging from 159 to 200 kilowatt hours while still being able to support 800 volt technology. If this data turns out to be true, the van could, under the best conditions, travel a distance of more than 800 kilometres. Obviously, this would probably be the strictly rear-wheel-drive version with the weakest motorization.

Speaking of motorization, Ram seems to line up for a huge selection of possibilities. There is more and more talk of a basic version with a power of 201 horsepower for propulsion. By switching to all-wheel drive, the cavalry would then increase to 443 horsepower. A faster version is also in the cards with some 885 horsepower.

For now, this information remains at the rumor stage, but it seems that Ram is on the trail of a hydrogen-powered engine. We do not know which approach will be favoured: the fuel cell or hydrogen as fuel in a heat engine. Either way, if Ram ventures down this avenue, he’ll be the first to do so.

ONECARSPOT’S REVIEW

Ram is slow to unveil its electric pickup truck, but it should arrive almost at the same time as GM’s in 2024. Ford clearly has the advantage with the imminent arrival of the first units in Canada in the coming weeks.

However, if Ram does arrive with a hydrogen engine, it could well muddy the waters and finally offer a product that is relevant with this type of fuel.
