Every year, the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) publishes the list of the most stolen vehicles in the United States based on the number of insurance claims. The organization has published its list of the most frequently stolen vehicles for the years 2020 to 2022. It must be admitted that the results are quite interesting.
We find at the top of the list the two Muscle cars from Dodge, namely the Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcat/HEMI. According to the IIHS, theft claims for the Charger SRT Hellcat were more than 60 times more frequent than the average for all models when considering the proportion of examples in circulation.
Theft claims for the Charger HEMI were more than 20 times higher than average. Both vehicles have been on this list in the past, but the IIHS points out that the frequency of complaints has increased dramatically. For 2020-2022 Charger SRT Hellcat models, there were 25 complete vehicle theft claims per 1,000 insured vehicles, compared to approximately 18 for 2019-2021 models.
“If you own a Hellcat, you better check your driveway,” said Matt Moore, senior vice president of the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), “These numbers are incredible. »
The institute also mentions that Hyundai and Kia thefts have exploded in recent years after thieves discovered that many of them lacked electronic immobilizers.

Electric vehicles at the bottom of the list, including all Tesla models
Interestingly, 6 of the 20 models with the fewest complete vehicle theft claims are electric vehicles, and 6 are made by General Motors. We also find the different Tesla models, led by the Model 3 4WD and Model Y AWD.
According to the IIHS, in general, electric vehicles are stolen less often than other models. This may be because they are often parked in well-lit and relatively safe places for charging. Tesla’s Sentinel camera system, which offers the possibility of being filmed stealing the car, could have helped reduce the risks. The automaker also worked quickly to eliminate any cybersecurity concerns.
By examining claims by year of insured vehicles, HLDI Theft Reports allow people to compare the relative risk of each vehicle unlike other charts that simply report the most stolen, figures that do not take into account the number of units sold.
