Elon Musk inaugurates his giga-factory in Berlin

This giga-factory has been talked about for good and certainly less good reasons for several months. After the hasty start of construction, only 2 years ago, Elon Musk witnessed the start of the assembly line for its popular electric compact SUV, the Model Y. This is one of the largest automotive investments in Germany in decades. We are talking about a sum of 5 billion euros, or nearly 7 billion in Canadian currency.

It is therefore an extremely important day in the German automotive landscape. Considering how unique it was, Elon Musk made the trip to start the channel. In addition to the billionaire, the cream of German politics was also on hand, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as well as Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Robert Habeck.

The latter should certainly not be included in the list of best friends of Elon Musk. We remember that Tesla only officially obtained full freedom to build its facilities on March 4, when the factory was technically finished. He completely ignored some regulations regarding water consumption and even air pollution. Confident that he would eventually meet the requirements, he launched the construction without further delay. According to its initial plans, the factory was to open 8 months ago.

Elon Musk claims to have the desire to eventually produce up to 20 million vehicles annually by 2030. This is a gigantic step that only Musk is capable of achieving. In the case of the Grünheide plant, production will be gradual even if we are talking about 500,000 vehicles. These are not for tomorrow. In fact, for 2022, production is likely to oscillate around 54,000 vehicles, 280,000 in 2023 and 500,000 in 2025.

The site currently employs 3,000 people, but 12,000 will eventually work there, within 3 years. Consequently, these facilities will become the largest employer in the Länder of Brandenburg. To the Model Y assembly plant, we will have to add the plant that will manufacture batteries so the capacity will reach some 50 gigawatt hours.
