End of road for the Subaru Legacy

The latest Subaru sedan will soon be a thing of the past. The Canadian division of the Japanese brand has confirmed to us that it will abandon the Legacy at the end of the 2024 model year assembly cycle, a year earlier than in the United States.

“Let's just say that buyers will have to make do with what's in stock,” Sébastien Lajoie, public relations specialist at Subaru Canada, told us. You will therefore have to act quickly if you want to get your hands on one of the latest copies on offer.

Discreet but effective, the mid-size model made its first rounds in Canada in 1989 to compete with the Japanese leaders in the segment with a different approach relying on its standard all-wheel drive. The following year, it wore the colors of Subaru in the World Rally Championship, a sign of its strategic importance at the time. Several liveries marked its 35-year career, including the GT, which captured attention with its turbocharged engine, manual gearbox and reworked chassis.

This extinction is obviously not surprising given the situation which greatly favors SUVs and crossovers. Barely 351 Legacys found buyers in Canada in 2023. In response to weak sales, Subaru narrowed the Legacy range to the GT version equipped with a 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder (260 hp). ) for model year 2024.

The manufacturer's senior management also explains the decision by its electric shift which will result in the putting into production of eight electric models by 2028. The Solterra, co-developed with Toyota, is the brand's only electric proposition currently on the market. One thing is certain, this hasty end of the Legacy reconfirms the constant erosion of the car in favor of the SUV.
