First images of the Volkswagen California concept, the future of plug-in hybrid camping

It is not yesterday that the manufacturer volkswagen enjoys the attention of adventure van and camping enthusiasts. The manufacturer has just released the first images of its next camping van, the California concept. The official unveiling is scheduled for August 25, the vehicle will be premiered at the Caravan show in Düsseldorf. It will be a concept, but the manufacturer had confirmed the arrival of a production model in 2024.

New California concept is based on a stretched version of the Volkswagen Multivan from 7e generation. What sets it apart is above all its roof which can be deployed upwards and which adds impressive additional clearance, more than two metres. The camping vehicle vocation is also supported by the addition of two extendable side awnings, one on each side of the vehicle.

Inside, the second image shows an iPad-like touch control panel that allows you to control a bit of everything on board, including the thermostat, lighting and a small refrigerator.

The same plug-in hybrid engine as the Multivan?

As for the motorization, we know that the Volkswagen Multivan currently houses the eHybrid PHEV powertrain consisting of a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor, all developing a total output of 215 horsepower. Autonomy in electric mode reaches about 50 kilometers. At this time, the automaker has not confirmed whether the California concept will use the same powertrain.

VW Commercial Vehicles CEO Carsten Intra shared information at the annual press conference in March. “We’re looking to broaden our horizons with our camping models, offering that unique California feel. This not only includes digital improvements for our Cali community, but also a range of new after-sales services, and of course, the presentation of our new California concept built on the basis of the Multivan. »

Besides this unveiling, there is also a lot of speculation surrounding the early 2025 launch of a California version of the ID.Buzz, Volkswagen’s new electric SUV. The ID.Buzz is known to make its very first North American debut in 2024 in a longer wheelbase version than its European counterpart.

Conclusion

The “Van Life” trend continues to grow strongly and is attracting more and more adventure enthusiasts. The arrival of a new plug-in hybrid player could certainly interest more than one, this type of engine will reduce the cost of travel while ensuring greater peace of mind compared to a fully electric model.
