Ford F-150 Lightning: battery supplier speaks out on fire risk

Last week we reported the news that Ford had stopped production of the Ford F-150 Lightning due to a battery problem that could lead to a fire. The South Korean battery supplier SK On has, however, just commented on the situation. He claims that the fire that started in a copy parked at the Ford factory was only an isolated case.

At least, that’s what the media reports. The Detroit News after discussing with the supplier in question. According to the company, the failure was in no way caused by a design defect or an assembly error. SK On says, however, is working with Ford to target what it describes as “very rare and isolated cases” by investigating.

They also announced that it has resumed production of the batteries at its factory in Atlanta. It would have, according to what we understand, made some changes to its assembly line without however specifying what it is. The supplier assures that the defects only affect a few models retained in the Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Centerbased in Dearborn, Michigan.

Let us recall that, at the beginning of February 2023, a Ford F-150 Lightning caught fire in one of the manufacturer’s delivery parking lots on the outskirts of the assembly plant. This incident had drawn the attention of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
