Ford launches plug-in hybrid Ranger

Even though Ford massively increases production of hybrid and electric engines in the F-150 range, we learn that a version plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is introduced into the Tidy new generation. At the moment, we do not know if this version will be marketed in Canada, but several indicators point towards a positive response.

Built on the basis of the new international generation of the Ranger, the van recovers the 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder to which Ford engineers added an electric motor. For the moment, official figures remain unknown, but the manufacturer maintains that no other engine offers as much torque in the Ranger range.

As this is an international model, you have to look at diesel engines like the 3-liter V6 to see an engine that exceeds the 443 pound-feet of torque of the plug-in version. In terms of raw power, the 2.3-liter turbo already generates 270 horsepower, we assume that the combined power will be higher.

Ford is not yet disclosing the size of the battery, but confirms that the expected range is 45 kilometers. Unfortunately, this estimate was not made according to EPA standards, so we can expect a decrease in autonomy once on the Canadian market.

Still according to the manufacturer, the addition of electrification will not reduce loading or towing capacities. Off-road and 4X4 drive capabilities will be preserved. The introduction of electrification allows the integration of the Pro Power Onboard system into the body for supplying electricity to tools or accessories.

The plug-in hybrid Ranger is a first step in the electrification of the Ranger since a fully electric Lightning version is planned within a few years. Production of the 2025 Ranger PHEV will begin in 2024 with marketing in Europe and Australia.

Ford management does not rule out expanding the sale of the model elsewhere in the world. Considering that we will have the new generation of the Ranger as well as the 2.3-liter, it would be logical that our Ranger could receive electrification. In addition, the success of the F-150 Lightning clearly illustrates to Ford that electrification is desired by consumers.
