Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 to beat the 1400
Ford wants to write a new chapter in high-performance electric vehicle with a second installment to break NHRA circuit records. After the Cobra Jet 1400, it’s now the turn of the Super Cobra Jet 1800 to show up at the end of the track to smash the records of its predecessor.
The challenge is big. The mandate of the new Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 is to simply eclipse the records set by its predecessor’s bodied electric car, the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400. /hour. It was pilot Bob Tasca III who achieved these impressive figures in June 2021 on the track in Norwalk, Ohio.
Now we are in 2023 with the unveiling of a new vehicle, an evolution of the 1400. This time the goal is to push the boundaries even further. To achieve this, Ford Performance engineers and their partners have completely redesigned the electric car which now develops, as its name suggests, an output of 1,800 horsepower. In terms of mechanics, the engineers did not see fit to use new engines.
These are always two PN-250-DZR inverters juxtaposed with DS-250-115 electric motors. The engines remain the same, but their power is increased to 1,800 horsepower, 400 more than the previous version. Liberty is the official supplier of the gearbox which sends all the power to the rear axle. The latter was also created by the engineers of MLe Racecars. In the same vein, the new battery, whose capacity is not mentioned, is a joint design by Ford Performance and MLe Racecars.
Ford claims that the battery is lighter, and that the entire electrical management system has been completely redesigned. The entire chassis has been redone, in particular with a new suspension geometry of PMR design. For maximum grip on the ground, there are specific radial tires for drag racing designed by Mickey Thompson. With all of these modifications, a hundred pounds have been subtracted from the total mass of the car.
For Mark Rushbrook, managing director of Ford Performance, this kind of project is ideal for pushing the technical limits of the company. In addition, he attaches particular importance to the world of drag racing. “Drag racing remains a key place to test our products and technologies. We are excited not only to do our best, but also to break our own quarter-mile record and demonstrate that we are continuing development across the entire electric vehicle environment. »
With Pat McCue behind the wheel, the Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 will have three missions. First, beat the time and top speed of the Cobra Jet 1400 established in 2021. Second, eclipse the time of the fastest acceleration from 0 to 96 kilometers per hour for an electric vehicle.
And third, achieve the fastest acceleration for a two-wheel drive electric vehicle. Unfortunately, at this time, Ford Performance is not disclosing where and when these records may be broken. She only specifies that it will be later in the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) season.
