GM invests in new V8 engines
Currently, the manufacturer GM seems to be fully into electrification with numerous announcements and unveilings of future products that will be added to its portfolio. Faced with these big changes, we could believe that it was the beginning of the end for the combustion engine, but think again, GM recently announced that it was investing in a V8 engine small block of 6e
generation.
$854 million in investments for the V8 engine
Last week, the American manufacturer GM made an announcement concerning major investments in four of its factories in the United States. Of an amount of 918 million dollars, 854 million will go for the new generation of V8 engine and its components, while the remaining 64 million will go on top of previous announcements for electrification and the batteries of future electric vehicles. The manufacturer demonstrates with this action its intention not to put all its eggs in one basket.
This news confirms the manufacturer’s intention to continue to offer vehicles equipped with a combustion engine over the next few years, for those who want it. This small block of 6e generation will be used only in pickup trucks and full-size SUVs, according to GM’s statement. This therefore suggests that the manufacturer’s other vehicles currently using this engine risk disappearing from the market or using another engine than the one currently offered.
One last lap?
With the new government laws to put an end to the sale of gasoline vehicles, we have the right to wonder if this new generation of the V8 engine will be the last of this line which was born in 1954. Currently, the 5e generation has been on the market since 2013. This engine is also found under the hood of several GM vehicles, including the Camaro, the Corvette, the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, as well as the manufacturer’s full-size pickup trucks and SUVs.
For the moment, GM has not set a date for the arrival of this next-generation V8 engine under the hood of its vehicles. The technical details will also be known when it is put on the market.
