Honda leaves the lawn mower market

Honda, this Japanese engine manufacturer well known for the production of thermal engines of all kinds – from automobiles to generators – confirms that, in September 2023, it will stop producing lawnmowers. The manufacturer will continue to sell the remaining copies throughout 2024, while honoring the warranty and after-sales support for its products.

The announcement had actually been made at Honda’s power products dealerships in October 2022. The manufacturer was advising its franchisees that it would withdraw from the lawn mower market in a year. Remember that Honda has been building small engines to power all kinds of devices since 1953.

The decision would come from two important factors. The first being the serious supply problems that builders have been experiencing since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. These challenges have also had a monster impact on Honda’s ability to produce mowers at the same rate as before the pandemic.

The second and most important factor is the upcoming greenhouse gas (GHG) emission standards that complicate the commercialization of small gasoline engines. The sudden rise of electrical applications has also seriously impacted this market.

Here is the official statement from Honda:
“The decision to end lawn mower production is driven by market forces such as stricter environmental regulations, changing customer preferences and our focus on growing profitable products in our portfolio. Honda will continue to sell the rest of its garden product line and industrial power products such as GX engines, generators and water pumps, and will continue to support its service and parts operations in the US and Canadian markets. »

It is also important to note that this decision to withdraw from the lawn mower market only affects the Canadian and American markets at this time. Until further notice, Honda will continue to sell gas-powered mowers elsewhere in the world.
