Honda Unveils Civic Hybrid in Europe

Honda has already confirmed that the Civic hybrid would make its big comeback in the range as a 2023 model. If this engine is long overdue on our territory, the European market has just been exposed to their version of the thing. Besides the fact that it’s the 4-door hatchback version, that’s basically what we can expect.

Here, it would be unlikely that the hatchback is offered with this engine. Remember that Honda wants this version to remain the sportiest in the range before moving on to the Si. However, as has been the case in the past, our Civic hybrid will most likely only be a sedan, which, let’s remember- le, is not marketed in Europe.

Scheduled to be assembled at Honda Canada’s plant in Alliston, Ontario, following a massive $1.4 billion investment, the 2023 Civic Hybrid, which will be built alongside the next CR-V Hybrid , will have the same mechanics as its colleague. It’s an electrified 2.0-litre 4-cylinder, also offered on the Accord Hybrid side.

In its European version, which Honda calls the Civic eHEV, this engine deploys a total combined power of 181 horsepower and produces 232 lb-ft of torque. That’s a power reduction of 31 horsepower over the Accord. This engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Civic hybrid sold in Europe is front-wheel drive, as it will no doubt be the case here.

The return of the Civic hybrid is certainly coming with a lot of delay, but will no doubt allow Honda’s popular compact to remain the sales leader in Canada.

Remember that the absence of electrified mechanics makes it lose points against its main rivals, the Toyota Corolla and the Hyundai Elantra, in particular. The addition of a hybrid version therefore comes at the right time considering the recent surge in gas prices. Honda Canada will unveil our Civic hybrid in the coming weeks.
