In automobiles, white is still the most popular color in North America

Automakers are scrambling to allow future owners of their products to personalize their purchase. Rims, option packages and versions are regularly upgraded to allow consumers to make an informed decision. However, nothing can replace the color of a vehicle which, according to Axalta, is the main aesthetic reason for selection. This same company also tracked the most popular shades in North America, and white remains the most popular choice.

For 15 years

Still according to the study carried out by Axalta, white isn’t just the hottest shade this year, it’s been for the past 15 years. When we look at the North American car color chart, we can see that this coat is also the only one to have held the top spot in popular shades for so long. White is a favorite in every vehicle category, from the subcompact car to the full-size pickup truck.

Robert Schnell, Vice President, Global Sales and Product Management at Axalta, said that “compared to the white variations of the 1950s, these whites are brighter and radiate iridescent glitter.” In his opinion, this could then explain their growing popularity.

In North America, milky shades held the lead with 30% of cars sold in 2022. In second place are the different shades of gray with 29% of the market. The third position therefore goes to black, which was chosen by 19% of the population. If we combine the three colors, we can see that they represent 78% of automobile sales in North America.

Bright colors are gaining ground

For two years, blue has taken the lead over silver gray. This more dynamic color represents 11% of automobile sales last year, an increase of approximately 1%. Red is not outdone at 7%, which is higher than all the other colors combined, which represents less than 5% of the market.

White therefore remains the color most chosen by North American motorists. Yes, this tint offers more distinction than in the past, but it is also a color offered at no additional cost when purchasing a vehicle. It should be noted that, according to the company, green will be a color to watch in 2023; it is gaining popularity.
