Is the Mitsubishi Mirage taking its last lap?

The Mitsubishi Mirage has been on the roads for a few years now. Marketed as a 2015 model in 2014, the Mirage hasn’t seen any major changes in recent years, apart from a few aesthetic modifications. Built in Japan, this small subcompact will not be renewed in its country of origin, which raises doubts about its continuity in Canada.

One of the last subcompacts

The popularity of SUVs has led to the demise of many subcompact cars. The Hyundai Accent is no more, the Toyota Yaris is also gone, as is the Honda Fit. We also learned at the start of 2022 that the Chevrolet Spark was in its last year of production in our territory. It is easier to look at the last survivors than the missing. This category of vehicles now only includes the Nissan Versa the Kia Rio and the Mitsubishi Mirage.

Although no official announcement has been made regarding the future of the Mitsubishi Mirage on our territory, it is normal to doubt its return to our market in the near future given its disappearance in Japan. Mitsubishi being based in this country, this news probably announces the end of the model and the abandonment of a new generation of the vehicle.

A 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine

Still powered by the same engine since its launch in 2014, the Mitsubishi Mirage does not have the reputation of offering dynamic driving. The small 1.2L 3-cylinder engine develops 78 horsepower and produces 74 lb-ft of torque; it is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT. For comparison, the Kia Rio offers a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 120 horsepower and 113 lb-ft.

The reputation of the Mitsubishi Mirage is based on its low fuel consumption which fluctuates around 6.5 litres/100 kilometers in combined driving. The 10-year or 160,000-kilometer manufacturer’s warranty is also a plus of the Mirage. The highlight is mainly its price. The manual-transmission ES version is priced at $17,040 including freight and delivery charges. The Mitsubishi Mirage is the cheapest vehicle on the market given the demise of the Chevrolet Spark.
