It already feels like the end for the Hyundai Kona N
Hyundai is preparing it’s Kona 2024 and according to what has already been revealed online about it, it will still be offered in a thermal and electric version. However, no trace of the N-version high performance. In fact, everything suggests that this version will not be renewed for a second generation.
We have learned from reliable sources that upcoming greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards may discourage Hyundai from moving forward with a redesign of the Kona N. Recall that the current model is driven by a gasoline engine. 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with power and torque of 276 horsepower (286 horsepower in NGS mode) and 289 lb-ft.
Such a motorization causes it polluting emissions of 246 grams of CO2
per kilometer, which is 72 grams more than a regular front-drive Kona.
In fact, our source informed us that Hyundai is very sensitive to upcoming EPA standards that will force SUVs to go from 161 grams to 115 grams of CO.2
per kilometer from 2026. Like most manufacturers, the South Korean giant does not want to face severe penalties, for which it could limit the thermal versions of the Kona to the N Line version which, at the time of ‘write these lines, emitted 193 grams of CO2 per kilometer. In all likelihood, priority will be given to the Electric Kona.
The letter N will continue to exist
Performance enthusiasts may be disappointed with this announcement, but hope should not be lost, as Hyundai indeed intends to preserve its N division in an electric world. In fact, according to the information we have obtained, it will be the IONIQ 5 N which will take up the torch from the Kona N. This model, which will be offered with four-wheel drive and which would be about to complete its practical tests on track, will be unveiled by this summer. The production version could land at dealerships nationwide by early next year.
For those interested, know that the very unique and charismatic Hyundai Kona N will continue to be marketed at least until the end of 2023, when the Kona 2024 will undoubtedly arrive on the market. It can therefore be expected that this performance model, which was marketed for only two model years, will become a rare and sought-after vehicle on the second-hand market.
