Jeep unveils its first North American electric model

Jeep has never been about electrification. You just have to remember the SRT versions of the Grand Cherokee, or even the Rubicon 392 variant of the Wrangler, equipped with thundering V8s, to be convinced of this. The fact remains that the 4×4 brand has been developing a plug-in hybrid sector for several years, introduced by the Wrangler in 2021. It is now preparing to launch its first electric creation intended for our market: the Wagoneer S.

However, don't let its name fool you: this Wagoneer S apparently shares nothing with the full-size SUV of the same name, which is not energy efficient. In fact, this new model is built on an STLA Large electric monocoque platform as opposed to the ladder chassis of its distant cousin. It is also considerably smaller, measuring 4.9 m in length compared to 5.4 m for the Wagoneer with a thermal engine.

Its more streamlined design also differs greatly. With a drag coefficient of 0.29 cx, it is the lowest drag Jeep ever produced. All this with the aim of increasing autonomy, this workhorse among electrics.

The 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S

To store the necessary energy, this Wagoneer S has a 100.5 kWh battery connected to a 400 V electrical architecture. It powers two electric motors which produce a maximum cumulative power of 600 hp. 0-97 km/h (0-60 mph) is therefore only a matter of 3.4 seconds. Despite this power, the towing capacity is nevertheless limited to 1542 kg (3400 lb).

Note also that the brand has not detailed its off-road capabilities, probably preferring to target a more general audience with this product, a change in direction that is nonetheless notable.

Following a major trend in the industry, the SUV is also adorned with a dashboard lined with 114 cm screens. These allow you to operate the excellent Uconnect 5 multimedia system. The Jeep Wagoneer S will go on sale in Quebec in the fall at a cost of $88,995.
