KIA | Production of the Rio will end at the end of the year

One only has to look at the long list of models that have withdrawn in recent years to see how the conventional subcompact car is dying.

Currently, only three models operate in this segment prized for its affordability: the Kia Rio, the Mitsubishi Mirage and the Nissan Versa. The Rio will soon be a thing of the past. The Korean manufacturer has confirmed the end of its production after our colleagues from the Car guide had flushed out the news.

The one that has long been considered one of the best of its horde will lower its flag in December, leaving behind an empty space that it has filled for 22 years in the Canadian Kia lineup.

Retailed at $19,909 and offered only in a hatchback version since 2021, this Rio, powered by a small 1.6 L (120 hp) four-cylinder, symbolizes a size and simplicity that are disappearing in the face of the unbridled increase in crossovers and SUVs. It will therefore be up to the Seltos subcompact crossover, offered at $27,809, to win over its clientele. One more barrier that stands in front of the buyer seeking to obtain a good affordable vehicle.
