Mercedes AMG GT63 SE 2023 performance: A plug-in hybrid of 831 horsepower

The shift to electric is particularly complex for some car manufacturers, especially those who have a history of performance with the heat engine. How Mercedes-AMG, a division that has long stood out for its huge V8 engines, is it doing to reinvent itself in an electrified world? With a model like this: the AMG GT63 SE Performance 2023, a plug-in hybrid that has nothing to envy to large engines.

Not only the Mercedes-AMG GT63 SE Performance 2023 It turns out to be the first AMG vehicle in history to be powered by plug-in hybrid mechanics, but it is also the most powerful model the manufacturer has ever produced to date. When you combine all of its powertrains, it produces no less than 831 horsepower and produces an incredible 1,082 pound-feet of torque. This is unheard of at Mercedes-AMG.

To achieve this, the GT63 SE Performance uses a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that alone develops 630 horsepower and produces 664 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and the manufacturer’s 4MATIC + all-wheel drive, this engine receives assistance from an electric motor integrated into the rear axle.

This is powered by a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 4.8 kilowatt hours, which allows it to develop up to 201 horsepower for 10 seconds, or 94 continuous horsepower. An internal charger with a capacity of 3.7 kilowatts then takes care of refueling the battery.

Small autonomy, big performance

Being designed primarily for the sole purpose of delivering breathtaking performance, the AMG GT63 SE Performance does not have a very high electric range. It can only travel 12 kilometers (according to WLTP protocol estimates) on a full charge, which seems more like a joke.

On the other hand, its accelerations are among the fastest in the industry. Thanks to a gun starter system, this grand coupé-type sedan is able to complete the sprint from 0 to 100 km / hours in just 2.9 seconds, provided its battery is fully charged. Its combined fuel consumption would be estimated at 8.6 liters / 100 kilometers according to the European calculation method.

This variation of the AMG GT is distinguished by its colors exclusive to the model, four of which are of the matt type, and five of the metallic type. All AMG GT63 SEs receive V8 Biturbo E Performance badges installed on the front fenders.

Scheduled for marketing in 2023, we will have to be patient before seeing the AMG GT63 SE Performance on our roads. If all goes well for the manufacturer, this model will arrive in dealerships across the country before the end of next year. Canadian prices will be announced a few months before it goes on the market. Recall that Mercedes-AMG recently announced that it would suspend production of models powered by a V8 engine in 2022 due to serious supply problems, which could disrupt the marketing of this model.
