It’s time for annual reviews among automobile manufacturers. If some have had a more difficult year, the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi is on cloud nine, having established its best sales figures in its 21-year history in Canada.
A total of 35,708 vehicles were sold Mitsubishi in Canada in 2023. This is a considerable increase of 61.6% compared to the year 2022, when the manufacturer sold 22,101 examples in the country. Mitsubishi’s previous record was set in 2019, when the company sold a total of 25,535 vehicles. This means that more than 10,000 additional copies have been sold over the last 12 months.
At the heart of this record is the Mitsubishi Outlander, whose gasoline version saw its sales increase by 23% compared to last year. Sales of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, with a plug-in hybrid engine, also exploded with growth of 388% to reach 9,911 vehicles sold. The manufacturer emphasizes that Canada is one of the most important markets for the Outlander.
Faced with an industry that is experiencing price increases for new vehicles, Mitsubishi remains one of the few manufacturers to offer more affordable models. The Mitsubishi Mirage remains the least expensive new vehicle in the country with a base price of $18,748 including transportation and preparation costs.
The Mitsubishi RVR also remains an important vehicle in the lineup, competing with other subcompact SUVs thanks to its attractive base price. Adding to the models’ appeal is the 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty.
The manufacturer Mitsubishi has come a long way since its arrival in Canada in 2002. I attended the presentation of the vehicles and the manufacturer was falling behind several manufacturers. Despite its reduced resources, Mitsubishi struck a major blow by introducing the Outlander PHEV, one of the first plug-in hybrid SUVs.
