Mitsubishi has a strong presence in the midsize pickup segment and has done so for years. Named Triton or L200, the model is sold in Japan and in various markets, it is assembled at the Mitsubishi plant in Laemchabang, Thailand.
While the 6e
generation of the pickup should be presented later this year, Mitsubishi took advantage of the 44e Bangkok Auto Show to unveil the Mitsubishi XRT Concepta van that hints at what the future might look like Triton. You should know that the current generation is already nine years old.
Mitsubishi has never closed the door on selling a small pickup truck in North America again. Hyundai recently got into it with its Santa Cruz, Honda continues to do well with its Ridgeline, and Ford has also made a comeback with the Ranger and Maverick.
The Mitsubishi XRT Concept is visually quite successful and could certainly do well in terms of design. For the moment, the manufacturer has not revealed the technical characteristics of the engine of the concept vehicle. We know, however, that the current Triton van benefits from a choice of 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines as well as a choice of automatic and manual gearboxes.
Conclusion
The Mitsubishi Triton is currently exported to 150 countries. It’s hard to predict its arrival in North America, especially since the manufacturer is part of the Renault-Nissan alliance, which already markets the Nissan Frontier. It must be admitted that this concept has a mouthful.
