Previously produced Hyundai IONIQ 5s will remain without a rear wiper

The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 made a good impression on us when it was introduced last fall. However, we criticized it for the lack of a rear windshield wiper, an element that undermines visibility when the weather deteriorates. Hyundai intends to rectify this, but we have learned that current models will not be recalled to be equipped with it.

Since its launch last fall, the IONIQ 5 is one of the electric vehicles most in demand, so much so that the manufacturer had to stop orders, the production being practically sold out for the next two years.

When the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 was launched, we discovered that the vehicle did not have a rear wiper. It was raining heavily, something quite surprising for the San Diego area, which had to the great regret of the organizers, brought to light this design problem.

Asked about it, the people at Hyundai told us that the engineers had decided not to fit a rear windshield wiper since the spoiler and the shape of the roof would prevent dirt from getting on the rear window. We have to admit that they were wrong since the problem was heavily publicized.

Too much transformation

We had the chance to discuss it again with the people from Hyundai at the last New York Auto Show. It is very likely that the Hyundai IONIQ 5 will receive a windshield wiper in the future, but we have also been confirmed that current and already sold models will not be recalled to be equipped with it.

It would be much too complex to do so since the addition of the equipment, and especially the electric motor, will require a fairly significant transformation of the rear spoiler. Owners will therefore have to live with this inconvenience, but observing the interest that the vehicle generates, many owners do not seem to mind.

ONECARSPOT’S NOTICE

The pressure on manufacturers to bring vehicles to market much more quickly is enormous, which is why we are discovering more and more teething mistakes in new models. Our recommendation to wait a year before getting a new vehicle makes even more sense.
