Sales of electric vehicles eligible for rebates are exploding

Despite serious model availability issues, the electric vehicle craze continues to be in full swing. In August 2022, more electric vehicles eligible for the federal rebate program were sold than ever before, breaking new sales records.

Tesla remains firmly at the top, but the biggest surprise in all of this is hyundai ! If we add up the sales of all its electrified vehicles eligible for the federal rebate program, we can see how quickly it is progressing.

These are the latest statistics from Transport Canada on the sale of new vehicles subject to the federal government’s iZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle Incentive) program. However, it is important to specify that these figures only include models eligible for the $5,000 rebate, ie those with a base MSRP of $55,000 or less. They therefore do not represent all the models sold by Tesla.

These statistics prove that sales are on the rise for electrified vehicles in the country and show a record high of 6,956 new vehicles sold in August 2022. They also show that some generalist manufacturers, such as Hyundai and Chevrolet, have been very popular this year.

In fact, during the month of August 2022, Chevrolet even surpassed Hyundai. The American manufacturer sold 1,086 vehicles eligible for the rebate program, compared to 1,045 for Hyundai. Tesla, for its part, however, sold more than double, or 2,177 vehicles.

All of this is all the more interesting considering that no Tesla model is now eligible for the iZEV rebate. So how does Tesla outperform other automakers? Recent deliveries of Model 3s, sold during the period it was eligible for the program, allowed it to remain at the top throughout August.

But if we observe the trend since the beginning of the year, we see how much the South Korean industrial giant is gaining gallons. To date in 2022, Tesla has sold 9,725 vehicles eligible for the rebate, while Hyundai is just behind at 9,344 vehicles sold.

As for Chevrolet, it is far behind with 2,733 vehicles sold since the beginning of the year. However, consideration should be given to the discontinuation of Bolt EV and EUV production due to the massive battery recall. This is what harmed the manufacturer’s sales performance.

Tesla, queen of electrics, Ford, PHEVs

While the Tesla Model 3 dominates eligible pure-electric vehicle sales, it’s Ford that tops all other manufacturers in plug-in hybrids with the Ford Escape PHEV.

Indeed, the Dearborn manufacturer has, so far this year, sold 1,936 electrified Escape eligible for the iZEV program. Not far behind are the Toyota Prius Prime (1,815) and the Jeep Wrangler 4xe (1,629).

Unsurprisingly, Quebec sells the most eligible electrified vehicles in Canada, with 3,518 vehicles out of the 6,956 sold across the country in August 2022. To date, Quebec is at the top with 20 115 vehicles sold, followed by British Columbia (9,730 vehicles) and Ontario (6,582 vehicles).
