Semiconductors: improvement in North America, Europe and China still affected

There shortage of semiconductors and parts supply issues continue to give automakers headaches. However, there is a glimmer of hope for North American factories, those that have been hardest hit by this crisis. In fact, during the past two weeks, there has been no production stoppage.

The latest data from last week, published by AutoForecast Solutions through the media Automotive News, shows that around 41,700 vehicles could not be built worldwide due to a lack of parts. Among this number, we note that the regions most affected are above all Europe (16,400 fewer vehicles), China (15,500 vehicles), the rest of Asia (8,000 vehicles), as well as the Middle East and Africa (1,700 vehicles).

It was therefore the European and Chinese factories that were the most affected by the supply problems last week, while the North American factories operated at full capacity.

That being said, even if the North American manufacturing industry is improving, it remains the most penalized since the start of 2023. To date, nearly 600,000 vehicles have not been built. on our continent, compared to 338,689 in Europe and 265,622 in China. In total, AutoForecast Solutions predicts that there will be a shortage of more than 2.8 million new vehicles worldwide by the end of the year.

Conclusion

It is still too early to know if the improvement of the situation in our market is linked to the recent efforts of manufacturers and governments to create independence for our factories.

Remember that several efforts have been made over the past year to create local supply chains that would allow North American auto plants to be less dependent on foreign markets.

However, there is still a long way to go, because it is obvious by looking at the average waiting times for consumers that the situation is still proving to be problematic. Hopefully the North American auto industry will learn from this crisis so it doesn’t happen again.
