Singer Turbo Study: the Porsche 930 Turbo reinvented

Since 2009, Singer Vehicle Design quickly gained respect in the automotive world, but especially among fans of Porsche models. The young Californian company specializes in the restoration of the restomod type of old 911. These are meticulously retouched in order to create, according to Rob Dickinson, the founder of Singer, the perfect 911. His newest project is called the Singer Turbo Study, an homage to the very first 911 Turbo introduced in the 1970s. And it’s absolutely stunning.

The most interesting thing about this creation is that, just like the other models that Singer produces, the Turbo Study is actually based on a 964 generation, i.e. the 911 marketed between 1989 and 1994.

Singer Turbo Study

Both modern and classic

To give it the look of 930, Singer completely modified the curves of its bodywork by integrating carbon fiber. It is especially the fenders and the rear part that have received the most significant alterations. True to form, Singer modernizes the vehicle in key areas by integrating LED headlights and taillights as well as carbon fiber in strategic places to reduce the car’s net mass. Moreover, Mr. Dickinson affirms that the Turbo Study would not exceed 1,270 kilos (2,800 pounds).

Singer Turbo Study

A whole engine

Under its bonnet, installed at the rear, rests a 3.8-litre biturbo flat-6. It’s air-cooled to honor older 911s. This block, which is essentially the Mezger engine that powered the 911s of the 1980s and 1990s, has been extensively modified and given electronic turbocharger wastegates.

Coolers have also been specially designed for the Turbo Study. Singer also took the opportunity to completely redesign the rear wing to allow it to better route air to the engine to cool it. “Base” horsepower is said to be 450 horsepower, but Singer says customers can demand more power from their car. Obviously, this engine can only be paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Singer Turbo Study

Made to order, and very expensive

But it is especially in the cockpit that the Turbo Study shows us the real know-how of Singer. The company reviews every single detail in order to accentuate the classic and sporty appearance of the 911 Turbo of yesteryear. The five circular dials installed in the instrumentation are completely rebuilt, and Singer has even installed a compartment for the smartphone. Everything is, however, very well thought out, which makes it possible to keep the flagship identity of this model intact, while injecting it with a much appreciated touch of modernism and luxury.

Singer Turbo Study

Like all other creations from Singer, the Turbo Study is a custom-assembled model whose bill is completely disproportionate. Singer does not disclose its prices publicly, as these change according to customer requests. He can fully customize the cabin with an almost infinite choice of materials and color schemes. Based on older Singer models, a bill well over US$500,000 is conceivable for the Turbo Study.

Singer Turbo Study

Singer has already confirmed that 70 customers have already made a deposit for a copy. The first models will be fully assembled by this summer. Singer plans to appear at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with the Turbo Study on June 23.
